Let's put this under the title of for the grace of God I avoided disaster, so it may be worth a few minutes for you to check your GB steering....
The classic GB's have cable steering and in the stern the cable is attached to one rudder with a bar connected to the other rudder:
While we were cruising I was in the lazarette and happened to bump the bar with my foot and noticed it was loose....very bad! The issue was that the previous owner allowed the bar to rub on the pulley, which loosened the connecting nut (there are two nuts and one was already off):
To resolve this I raised the bar to eliminate the friction with the bar holding the pulley.
If you have a GB with twin engines it might be worth a few minutes to check your steering!
